Cropping vs resizing — and why it matters
These get mixed up constantly, and picking the wrong one is why images end up looking stretched or soft.
Cropping cuts away the parts of a photo you don't want. The pixels that remain are exactly as they were — same sharpness, same colour.
Resizing keeps the entire photo but redraws it at different dimensions. Scaling down throws away detail; scaling up invents it, which is where that mushy look comes from.
So which do you need?
- Crop when the frame is wrong — too much empty space, subject off-centre, or you need a square from a wide photo.
- Resize when the composition is right but the file is too big for an upload limit.
- Often both — crop to the right shape first, then resize down to the target pixels. In that order, you never lose detail you needed.
Which export format should you pick?
PNG for a genuinely lossless crop. JPG re-compresses on every save; still the smallest choice for photographs. WebP is the middle ground: far smaller than PNG at near-identical quality. AVIF compresses even better but takes longer to encode. TIFF and BMP are for print and archival.
